Building trust with agents: discovery, limits, and honesty
By Jahid Hasan
Trust is not a vibe — it is predictable behavior under load, clear boundaries, and accurate metadata when someone automates your public endpoints.
Agents amplify whatever your site already does. If you return soft 404s, inconsistent canonical URLs, or ambiguous content signals, automation will spread that confusion faster than a human reviewer would.
Treat agents like power users
Power users notice latency, caching, and edge cases. Agents notice the same things — except they do not “ shrug and continue.” They loop, retry, or mis-summarize.
Honesty compounds
If you do not want content used for model training, say so in a way your infrastructure actually enforces. If you welcome retrieval but not bulk scraping, encode that distinction where clients can read it — and where your team can audit it.
